Foresite Top of the Class Again
Another fantastic achievement for the Foresite team is to land the prestigious contract to Design and Install the external and internal glazing solutions on the The Manchester College, Fielden Campus redevelopment project for Wates Construction Limited. After being stalled for 6 months the college finally got approval for the funding required from the Learning and Skills Council from their Building Colleges for the Future budget. Comments from the Principal, Peter Tavernor and Project Architect Adam Grey clearly highlight the importance of this development to the immediate community and the attention being given to impact on the wider world in relation to the gazed façade (www.themanchestercollege.ac.uk). We are proud to be at the forefront of achieving such important building goals.
Principal, Peter Tavernor, said: 'We are delighted that work can continue at the Fielden Campus to realise our vision for a 21st century learning environment in south Manchester. The local community stands to benefit enormously from the increased learning opportunities that the campus will offer and the local environment will profit ecologically from the more energy efficient campus and the conservation area, which will offer protection for the rare wildlife that currently reside in the college grounds.'
Architect Adam Grey, from Walker Simpson said: 'From a design perspective, the removal of the temporary buildings, the replacement of the heavy brick entrance with glazing, and the remodeling of the landscape will greatly improve the transparency and approachability of the building. But in addition to creating an attractive setting for learning, we were also given the brief to achieve environmental sustainability by recognising the embodied energy within the existing building.
'As such, changes to the façade will be made to secure the biggest environmental gains in terms of carbon reduction. The replacement of glazing to the main tower and the proposed Learning Resource Centre will vastly reduce heat loss, which formerly accounted for a large part of the energy used within the building.'
Utilising combinations of Schuco’s curtain walling suites FW50+ and TTC 50 with integrated structural bonded 102 vents the external façade and glass specified will not only provide an extremely pleasing aesthetic statement but will contribute to reducing the running costs and emissions of the building for many years to come. Internally bespoke structural glazed screens and doors will delineate zones for maximum simplicity and quality of working space.
Work is well underway with the contract anticipated to be handed to the college at the start of the summer 2010 and Foresite will continue to strive to meet our Company Aims in all areas though the successful completion of this high value contract.
